Interviews with Local Residents

Tuckerton High School Class of 1946

John and Nancy O’Neil were born in 1929. John was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; but he moved to Tuckerton when he was one year old. Nancy was born in Tuckerton, and she has lived here ever since. John worked for Atlantic Electric and Nancy was a secretary.
The O’Neils graduated from Tuckerton High School in 1947. They grew up during World War II. Supplies went to the troops, so food was conserved and many things were recycled. For example, in order to get toothpaste, you had to take your old toothpaste tube to the pharmacy and hand it in to get a new one. The old toothpaste tube was recycled and the lead was sent to make bullets or anything else needed for the war.
Growing up, the town was much different. Everybody knew each other. Most things were within walking distance. Neither of them traveled very far when they were kids. It was very rare to see a car in town because cars were so expensive.
On the weekends and after school, there was a movie theatre, dances were attended, and fun games were played. There was a pharmacy that had a soda fountain. Many kids hung out there also. In the summer, the lake was used for swimming because it had crystal clear water. Also, Tuckerton Creek was a very common hang out. Kids would swim there also.
In the winter, the kids would ice skate in the lake. They lit tires on fire for light, and a source of heat. John and many other towns people hunted. John also said that hunting is a very good learning experience, and he highly recommends it to kids today. John and Nancy were a great source for information on Tuckerton.
